³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌin France

Academics

Students enroll in at least 15 credits  each semester in Montpellier. Each student is required to take at least one French language course at the appropriate level. Students will typically take 5 classes and most courses are 3 credits each. Students will receive direct ³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌcredit for all courses taken in Montpellier. Grades from the semester/year in France will appear on their ³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌrecord and will be factored into a student's GPA. 

Academic Program Tracks

Students select from one of 5 academic program tracks depending on their French language level and the types of courses they want to take. Students will take classes at the UMN Program Center, taught by local faculty in etiher French or English, only for for students on the program. Classes at local universities are available for some program tracks (see below). 

For students with no prior French or are enrolled in/completed WLF-101

French Language Course - REQUIRED

Select 4 additional courses from the UMN program center taught in English

Community Engagement (optional)

For students who are enrolled in/completed WLF-102, WLF-203, or WLF-206*

French Language Course - REQUIRED

Phonetics - REQUIRED

Option to enroll in 3 French language courses instead of required courses listed above (by exception)

Select 3 additional courses from the program center or in the Relations International department (RI) with other international students at the University Paul Valéry (UPV).

Select courses in English are offered in other departments at UPV.

Community Engagement (optional)

For students who are enrolled in/completed  WLF-206 /WLF-208 or above. 

Advanced Grammar & Methodology course at the appropriate level - REQUIRED

Writing in French or Phonetics course - REQUIRED

At least 1 direct enroll course at University Paul Valèry or University of Montpellier (taught in French) - REQUIRED

Select 2 additional courses taught at either the UMN program center or partner university.

Internship (optional)

French language course (beginner to advanced) - 4 credits - REQUIRED

Global Business & Industry: France at the Crossroads (Business core course) – 3 credits - REQUIRED

2 direct enroll course at MOMA Montpellier Management Institute (taught in English or French) – 6 credits total – REQUIRED

Select 1 additional course from the UMN program center or MOMA

Community Engagement or Internship (optional)

French Language course (beginner to advanced) - 4 credits - REQUIRED

If you are an Advanced French language speaker, contact the OCSE Program Manager to discuss possibilities of taking Psychology courses in French.

Community Engagement - 3 credits - REQUIRED

Select 2 additional courses from the UMN program center

*Students that are enrolled in/have completed WLF-206 will be considered for either the Intermediate or Advanced Language track on a case by case basis.

UMN Course Catalog

The University of Minnesota's Learning Abroad Center has created a searchable course catalog for courses offered in Montpellier. This course catalog allows users to select the academic program track, the term, and language of instruction. Please note that courses listed in the course catalog are not guaranteed and is subject to change.

To find the ³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌequivalent for courses listed in the UMN Montpellier Course Catalog, please search the . After logging in through OKTA, click on "Approved Courses" in the top menu and then select "³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌin France" from the drop-down list of program options. Please contact the ³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌin France Program Manager.

Partner Universities

Courses at local French universities are available for students in the Advanced Language & Culture and Business in France tracks. Business students must take 2 courses at MOMA, and Advanced Language & Culture students must take at least 1 direct enroll course at partner university (UPV, UM, or Polytech). The ³¬¼¶µõÖÓÄÌin France Program Manager and UMN staff will help students to find appropriate courses and get Skidmore course equivalents. 

  • University Paul Valèry (French taught courses in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences)
  • University of Montpellier (French and English taught courses in biology, environmental studies, economics, political science, sociology, psychology and management)
  • Polytech (French taught courses in computer science and engineering; very limited course options taught in English)
  • MOMA - Institut Montpellier Management (Business track only - English and French taught courses in finance, accounting, marketing, human resources, communication, and law. Wide range of French taught courses available for students that have taken WLF-206 or above.)

Actual course offerings at the partner institutions will vary each semester depending on what is being offered, schedules and students’ academic needs. All courses are subject to availability and schedule.

Students on the Intermediate Language & Culture program track may have the opportunity to take courses at UPV. Students on the Psychology and Beginning Language & Culture track will only take courses at the UMN Program Center.

Internships

Internship experiences are also available to participants with a high-intermediate level (usually the equivalent of at least 4 semesters of French language, WLF-206 or above). In addition to the seminar, students spend between 8-10 hours per week at their internship site. A variety of different internships are available. To see a sample of past internships, click  

Community Engagement

Community Engagement placements are availalbe for students with a beginning to intermediate level of French language. Similar to an internship, students enroll in the Community Engagement course and also spend time at a local engagement site such as an NGO, a charity, French schools, etc. The Community Engagement course/placement is required for students on the Psychology track and is optional for students on other tracks.
